Go Comets!

Comet community! If you haven't heard, this has been a great week for our kids. Our FFA kids went to Lansing this week for the state convention. Hunter Bognar was nominated President for the upcoming school year. Alexis Ewing won Star in Agriscience. Hannah Young and Lucas Kyser were Gold Award State winners. Carley Graves and Lilly Russell were Silver Award winners. And Ryder Cornett was a Bronze Award winner. He also made an excellent guide and host to me. What I was most impressed by was how good all the kids from around the state were to each other. What a supportive community!
Our band earned 1's at the band festival! This is no easy feat. They have shown so much growth under our new director Mrs. Ortell.
We have four high school students: Helena Muenst, Ava Kramer, Jenna Hadley and Rachel Mayhew whose artwork was chosen to be a part of this year’s JXN Art Teachers Art Show at Art634. The reception to view their work is Saturday March 9th, from 1-4 pm.
We have our bowling teams and a wrestler (Evan McColley) competing at the STATE level this weekend! Our boys basketball team will be competing for the district championship tonight in Concord.
This is a great week to be a Comet. We have great kids who are doing great things. We are all very proud of their hard work and wish them congratulations and best of luck! I also want to thank all of the coaches and parents who are behind them supporting and encouraging them through their journey. It’s a sacrifice for all involved. When you see the student, or the adult, pat them on the back and congratulate them. They’ve earned it. Go Comets!

Good luck to our winter athletes who will be representing Jonesville competing for a state title this week!
On Friday and Saturday, senior wrestler Evan McColley will be wresting in the individual MHSAA meet at Ford Field in Detroit in the 215 pound weight class.
Both the girls and boys bowling teams will be traveling to Muskegon's Northway Lanes on Friday to compete in the MHSAA team state finals.
On Saturday, these girls will be at Muskegon's Northway Lanes for the MHSAA singles state finals - senior Hallie James, senior Mikayla DeBoe, and freshman Harper James.
Also on Saturday, these boys will be at Muskegon's Northway Lanes for the MHSAA singles state finals - junior Andrew Sackett and sophomore Kyle Covey.
Congrats to these teams, individuals and coaches on a great season! Continue to represent Jonesville in a positive way and show your Comet Pride!

The athletic department would like to introduce our new varsity volleyball coach - Sydney Barrett!
Coach Barrett is a former four year varsity Comet athlete in volleyball, basketball, and track. After high school graduation, she took her volleyball game to Hillsdale College. She played and started four years there, where she was a two year captain, a two year GLIAC Libero of the year, and an Honorable Mention All-American. After graduating from Hillsdale College, she worked on their volleyball coaching staff until she took over the Jonesville volleyball program from 2015-2019. She was also a former 1st grade teacher at Williams Elementary from 2012-2022. A quote that she made during the interview says it all about Coach Barrett - "This school and community holds a huge place in my heart and I am excited to once again have the opportunity to bleed ORANGE and BLACK, like I have for the past 25 years as a student, teacher, and coach."
Welcome back Coach Barrett!
Once a Comet, always a Comet!

At our board meeting last night, the JCS board voted in Ryan Griffiths as our new trustee. We are looking forward to adding him to our board and continue the great things happening at Jonesville Community Schools. Go Comets!

Tonight's board meeting will be held at Williams Elementary School library beginning at 6:00 pm.

Today at the Regional Singles Bowling Competition at Jax 60, the Comet bowlers qualified 5 bowlers for next weekend's state finals in Muskegon as four Comet bowlers were in the top ten of the girls and boys final standings. Only the top seven qualify for state this year.
On the girls side, it was senior Hallie James winning 1st place, followed by senior Mikayla DeBoe in 3rd place and freshman Harper James in 7th place. Junior Hayley Steveson finished in 8th place.
On the boys side, it was junior Andrew Sacket winning 1st place, followed by sophomore Kyle Covey in 4th place. Senior Matt Woodruff finished in 9th place and sophomore Marshall Baker finished in 10th place.
Great job to the Comet bowlers and their coaches!

Huge thank you to our friends at Jonesville Lumber!! Their donation is keeping two construction classes busy at the High School. Our classes at JHS learn about power tools, then use that learning to build a dimensional lumber project with materials provided by Jonesville Lumber. Students are building benches, tables, or whatever else they came up with. Next week we will begin to learn the process of building a shed. Then we build sheds! As of this posting, we have two clients lined up for sheds. We have room for up to 4 more. Email Jeff Dice if you are interested: jdice@jonevilleschools.org. Or text him at 989-246-4298.

Congratulations are in order for some of our athletic teams as we enter state competition!
Our Competitive Cheer team qualified for the Regional meet tomorrow, Feb 24, at Michigan Center High School with a top four finish in the District competition. The Regional competition starts at 10:00 am and tickets must be purchased through GoFan.co per MHSAA guidelines.
One member of the Comet wrestling team, Evan McColley, a senior, qualified for the individual state wrestling meet on March 1 at Ford Field in Detroit. Evan finished in 3rd place at the Regional meet last weekend to qualify.
Our Comet Bowling teams have been ranked all year in the state. The girls team is currently ranked 1st in Division 4 and the boys team is currently ranked 2nd in Division 4. Today, at the Regional team competition at Jax 60, it was the girls team winning the regional and the boys finishing 2nd. Both teams have qualified for the state finals next weekend in Muskegon. Tomorrow the teams return to Jax 60 for the Regional singles competition that starts at 9:00am. Tickets must be purchased through GoFan.co per MHSAA guidelines.

Good afternoon Comet families! I’m reaching out to you to let you know that the buses will be picking up your student(s) on time, but the backroads may cause some delay in normal drop off times. Thank you for your understanding as we want to be as safe as possible. Go Comets!

Comet community! I wanted to let you know that at our school board meeting on Monday, the JCS board unanimously elected Kayla Lewis as our new board President. In my time working with her, she has shown to be inquisitive, hard working, and an advocate for our district. We are fortunate to have her leading our board! Go Comets!!!

January is School Board recognition month. JCS would like to thank our board members for all the work they do not just on meeting nights, but also behind the scenes. There is a lot to the position that requires hours of work outside of meetings. Their task is not an easy one as they navigate the positions of so many stakeholders, but they always have the kids and staff at heart.
It should also be mentioned that last night was Travis Berlin's last night serving on the board. His life has taken him in another direction and we all wish him the best. I will miss his guidance and the patience he showed as a new person to the job. He helped me tremendously. We will be sending out information on filling that vacancy soon.
So if you see a board member out there, take a second and thank them for their service!
